Yasutaka Seki Photography Exhibition “Vanishing Tomorrow”
Yasutaka Seki’s photography exhibition “Vanishing Tomorrow” will be held at Gallery NEUTRAL in Kyoto from April 12 to 27, 2025.
Yasutaka Seki is a photographer born in Kumamoto, Japan. He worked in Japan and internationally as a photographer in the music industry while based in Okinawa, before shifting his focus toward artistic practice following the Kumamoto earthquakes. After the disaster, he returned to his birthplace and began creating work centered on the relationship between people and the land.
This exhibition explores Seki’s relationship with his hometown after the earthquakes, expressing his sense of Japanese identity and perceptions of nature, as well as his encounter with memories embedded in history. When he returned to his hometown for the first time in several decades, it differed from the place he remembered. He experienced a sense of distance caused by his inability to share the memories of the disaster, as well as uncertainty toward the changing landscape.
Through repeated photographic work, his previously uncertain relationship with the land gradually became clearer. For Seki, making photographs is an act of understanding and affirming his subject.
This exhibition presents works created through that process.
